Course Description

In the second part of his great epic, Divine Comedy, Dante and Virgil have crawled out of Hell to find themselves at the base of Mount Purgatory—and they are very quickly in for surprises. Most readers of Dante will stop at the Inferno, but in Purgatorio Dante returns to develop and revise his understanding of sin, love, evil, justice, and God’s providence in the cosmos. The Inferno begins Dante’s thinking but understanding his thought requires that we continue the journey with him as he climbs the Mountain. Dante climbs in the role of a penitent soul, not merely a spectator but a participant, and so he grows in understanding of what Purgatory is, how it functions, and the centrality of love in the cosmos.
