HUAS90941 - Capitalism in the 20th Century

Course Description

Capitalism defined the 20th century. Through two world wars, a great depression, and globalization, capitalism connected people around the world even as it divided them, led to unprecedented prosperity as well as intense suffering, and altered the relationship between the economy and human life. This course will accomplish two goals. First, through brief weekly lectures, it will introduce students to the history of capitalism in the 20th century, from the Gilded Age to the Great Recession. Second, it will explore this experience through primary source readings by economists and social theorists (such as Lenin, Keynes, Schumpeter, Friedman, and Hayek) as they grappled to make sense of a changing world. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to discuss the history and ideas that shaped the modern world.
