Course Description

“There was only one Christian,” Nietzsche declared, “and he died on the cross.” Others disagree. In this class, we explore the modern crisis of faith, specifically as it appears in its Christian form and through various interpretations of the meaning of the incarnation and the mission of Christ. Readings include: in the seminar, Kierkegaard, Philosophical Fragments, Nietzsche, The Anti-Christ, Berger, The Sacred Canopy, and Simone Weil, Gravity and Grace; in the tutorial, selections from the New Testament, D. H. Lawrence, “The Man Who Died,” Par Lagerkvist, The Sibyl, Kazantzakis, The Last Temptation of Christ, and Shusaku Endo, Silence.
