Course Description

Course Description:

How do we write about our relationship to the more-than-human world in a time of crisis? How do we mourn what we are losing while still celebrating what persists? Are there possible new metaphors drawn from a subtler understanding of the natural world that can help us imagine a more sustainable and equitable way of being?

Over the course of eight weeks, participants will consider published fiction, nonfiction, and poetry that has taken up these challenges and generate new writing of their own.  This course is designed to build on the autumn quarter literature course Telling New Stories: Literary Imagination and the Climate Crisis. Participants will find this course builds on what they have discussed there, however no prerequisite course is necessary to participate.

Instructor:

This course is taught by Stephanie Friedman, an instructor at the University of Chicago Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies. Friedman has had work published in Michigan Quarterly Review, among other venues, and a “distinguished” story listed in Best American Short Stories. She holds an MFA in writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts and an MA in English from the University of Chicago.

Notes: This course takes place via Zoom and leverages the Canvas platform for materials and occasional class discussion.

The deadline for registration is Dec 22, 2023, at 5 p.m. Enrollment is limited to 14 students, so early registration is strongly encouraged.
