Course Description

In Ulysses, James Joyce composed arguably the modernist novel par excellence. In the course of telling a story, Joyce explores not only the lives of his characters, but also story-telling itself. The novel makes heavy demands on its readers, and, in this course, we will meet those demands together in weekly close reading and discussion. This course welcomes in particular first-time readers of Ulysses.

The edition we shall use is the one edited by Hans Gabler: James Joyce. Ulysses (Gabler Edition). Random House. ISBN 978-0394743127.
