Course Description

In this course, we will discuss the writings and testimonies (in English translations) of five French writers and diarists who lived in German-occupied France from 1940-1945. Diaries such as Marguerite Duras’ The War and Agnes Humbert’s Resistance also shed light on the narratives in the Occupation Trilogy of Nobel Prize-winner Patrick Modiano. Lucie Aubrac’s Outwitting the Gestapo is a compelling account from Lyon, and Vercors’ clandestinely published resistance novella The Silence of the Sea (Paris: Les Editions de Minuit, 1942) continues to be read widely in France.
