Course Description

We will examine Faulkner’s Absalom, Absalom and Light in August against the background of several of O’Connor’s short stories: “Everything That Rises Must Converge,” “The Lame Shall Enter First,” “The Comforts of Home,” “Revelation,” and “Judgment Day.” We will focus on matters of style, concepts of reality and religion, the creation of “atmosphere,” and the myriad relations between conscious and unconscious behavior and motivation. We will also ask questions concerning the relationship between the “surreal” and the “mystical” in these two brilliant writers. Finally, we will consider what might be regarded as truly “Southern” in their respective views of fatality and humanity.
