Course Description

This course offers close readings of selected stories by Anton Chekhov and Raymond Carver, two writers who changed the very way we think about the short story. We will attend to the way their stories wring salient human meanings out of the ordinary situations that make up most of our lives. While many of the animating questions will be formal in nature—e.g., concerning narrative technique and perspective, the use of framing devices, varieties of implication and suggestion—questions about the human condition in its deepest moral and spiritual registers will always remain in focus.
