Course Description

In this course we will read letters, sermons, and other speeches (political and otherwise) about slavery in antebellum America. Nearly half the course will be dedicated to the speeches and writings of Abraham Lincoln on slavery. Addressing religious leaders, Lincoln mused about the divine will on slavery: “If it is probable that God would reveal his will to others, on a point so connected with my duty, it might be supposed he would reveal it directly to me…” Lincoln resolves, however, to rely on his own reason. The course concludes with the debate over emancipation and a close reading of Lincoln’s “Emancipation Proclamation.”
