Course Description

One of the greatest novelists writing in English, the Polish expatriate Jozef Konrad Korzeniowski became familiar with the language by reading Shakespeare and Dickens, and serving in the British merchant navy. As Conrad rose through the ranks from apprentice to captain he learned to analyze human behavior and emotions with startling lucidity and power. His novels explore themes that remain relevant today: terrorism and espionage, citizens and outsiders, and the long shadow cast by political revolution and colonial occupation. We will discuss Lord Jim, Nostromo, The Secret Agent, and other stories. For the first class please read Heart of Darkness. (8 weeks)
