Course Description

This class will begin an exploration of the novels of American writer Willa Cather, starting with her first masterpiece, the 1918 work My Antonia, which vividly portrays the life of pioneer Nebraska farmers and has been praised for vividly bringing place itself to life. Next we will turn to the equally beloved 1927 work Death Comes for the Archbishop, a historical novel which brings us into the European settlement of the Navajo and Hopi lands in the southwest and the ensuing clash of cultures and beliefs. We will engage in a close reading and discussion of both works. (6 weeks)
