Course Description

The most influential and controversial composer of the Nineteenth Century, the works of Richard Wagner (1813-1883) changed Western music permanently. This course examines the intrinsic musical qualities of his work as well as his relationship to the culture of his era and the powerful psychological dimensions he explores. Also considered is the fascinating responses of musicians and directors to his work, with multiple DVDs of each opera presented in class for comparison.
