HUAS78013 - The Triumph of the Classical Style: Haydn through Schubert
Course Description
Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert created the most resourceful and durable style in the history of Western music. Mastering all genres, private and public, their works continue to form the core of concert music today. This lively seminar provides historical context, describes the language, assesses the aesthetics, and traces the evolution of Classical style. From Haydn’s early quartets and symphonies and Mozart’s dramatic works, through Beethoven, and concluding with Schubert’s miraculous last year, this class shows the incredible diversity and breadth of the Classical achievement.

In-person programming must adhere to University of Chicago guidelines, including the following measures:
- All in-person participants must show proof of fully vaccinated status, defined as two weeks after the second dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or two weeks after one dose of a single-dose vaccine.
- All in-person participants eligible to receive the COVID-19 booster shot must meet this requirement and show proof of receiving a booster shot.
