Course Description

This course focuses on Tango, its performers, and its repertory between the years 1940 and 1955. This fifteen year span — known as “La Edad De Oro” — saw the emergence of some of Tango’s most renowned performers and poets. Figures like composer and singer Carlos Gardel and bandoneón virtuoso Anibal Troilo had a definitive impact on the sound of Tango and lyricists like Enrique Santos Discépolo and Homero Manzi became reference points for the poetics of the genre as we know it today. The course will also account for the incipient relationship between Tango performers and international recording labels (e.g. RCA-Victor) as well as the connection between Tango and Peronismo, the political party of Juan Domingo Perón who was in power between 1943 and 1955.
