Course Description

Film critics are writers who experience cinema with special eyes and ears. To appreciate this literary genre, we will read and discuss reviews from 1897 to 2017. Terms and methods evolve from traditions in interpreting theater, music, and art. Illustrations will come from films about filmmaking: Adaptation, The Artist, Contempt, 8 1/2, The Goldwyn Follies, Hail, Caesar!, Man with a Movie Camera, Sherlock Jr., Simone, Stardust Memories, State and Main, and Sullivan’s Travels. What do they teach us? We will see what the critics had to say.
