Course Description

Throughout history, people have responded to war, oppression, and personal demons with poetry. There are the shouts of Allen Ginsburg, Amiri Bakara, Muriel Rukeyser, and countless others. The very act of writing poetry is a protest against silence, against oppression, against corruption, against the status quo. We will discuss poets who have used their voices, music, metaphor, and imaginations to resist different forms of oppression. Using them as inspiration, we will write our own resistance poetry.
