Course Description

This class explores the work of the deservedly beloved Bohemian/Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke. We will begin with the haunting Notebooks, a powerful work based on the impressionistic musings of a young writer in Paris. From there we will undertake a selection of his best loved poems. Long underappreciated among English speakers, a variety of new translations by figures such as Stephen Mitchell and Galway Kinnell are now making the force and beauty of Rilke’s poetry accessible in the English language. We will study multiple versions of key poems. Finally, we will end with Letters to a Young Poet, a collection which gives a glimpse into Rilke’s views on living an authentic life. (6 weeks)
