Course Description

Two classic novels of personal development and resilience—Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe and Brontë’s Jane Eyre—have been “reformed” in the 20th century by J. M. Coetzee (Foe) and Jean Rhys (Wide Sargasso Sea). We will read both classics and their “reformations”, considering how the contemporary authors’ literary techniques and sensitivities to colonialism change the narratives of the originals, and how the later novels serve as critical transformations of personal development narratives.
