Course Description

We will read one myth a week, each with a distinct provenance. While each myth is distinct, they share common motifs and disclose comparable culture perspectives. The Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh was translated and read continuously for two millennia, and sings of the quests of King Gilgamesh to find meaning in human relations despite human mortality. The Baal epic, which sings of the Canaanite bronze age theomachy, and Hesiod’s Theogony, both establish a new order among the gods. We will look at selections from the Bible that have similar motifs.

Testimonials

“The course itself has been a fairly seamless recreation of the classroom experience from the Basic Program. All participants had a fair opportunity to express their views and ask questions, and the “online blackboard” was an effective tool for the teacher to present ideas and improve or confirm student understanding of the topic. Within two or three classroom sessions, I became accustomed to the online environment and speaking into the camera.” —Al K.
