Course Description

Mencius (Mengzi) is widely considered the most important Confucian thinker after Confucius (Kongzi) himself. The fact we still use the Latin versions of their names is a reminder of their foundational role in shaping European expectations about Chinese culture. Mencius is above all renowned for his thesis that “human nature is good” and for his vision of charismatic, virtuous government that responds to the needs of its people. The philosophical depth of the text is matched by its impact on East Asian politics, education, and ideological resistance to Buddhism.
