Course Description

A work anchored in Renaissance humanism but pivoting into the various reformations of European Christianity, Erasmus’s The Praise of Folly is essential reading for the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. Though remaining Catholic in the face of sweeping religious change, Erasmus, like Luther, was highly critical of religious practices of his day. This short course will focus on a close reading of The Praise of Folly, Erasmus’s most popular and well-known work. Beginning as a satirical praise of Folly personified that follows ancient rhetorical models while turning into an indictment of religious superstition, the work demands from the reader a sensitivity to irony.
