Course Description

The first of the modern utopias, whose influence extends into contemporary science fiction and dystopian literature, Thomas More’s Utopia works as the narrative construction of a speculative counter-world, the implications of which serve as a critical lens on the social troubles of his day. This short course will focus on a close reading of the work, paying particular attention to the extent of the differences between More’s historical reality and the text’s imagined reality. This is another work that deserves reading on the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation.
