Course Description

In this course, we will explore some of the major ideas that have shaped Chinese thought and society through selections in translation from some of its major texts. Each class will center around an idea or movement that inspired significant reflection on the part of readers in China and abroad. We will read from classics such as the Dao de jing, the Analects of Confucius, and the Buddhist meditations of the empress Wu Zetian. We will also read topically from key texts on art criticism, the practice of war, and on reform and revolution. This course aims to deepen our knowledge of Chinese intellectual history on its own terms.
