Course Description

Who is Muhammad?  What is the Quran?  When did Islam began?  This course exposes students to the debates on the origins of Islam by exploring the life of Muhammad, topics in the Quran, and the contours of the early Islamic community from its origins in the seventh century until the end of the Umayyad caliphate in 750 AD.  Through translated source readings, students will discover the narratives and perspectives of Islam’s founding, where it fits into world history, and how this legacy affected the future of the region and an entire civilization.
