Course Description

Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss were the two greatest composers of the post-romantic era, especially in their electrifying handling of musical color and timbre.  Mahler wanted his symphonies to be all embracing with their startling juxtapositions of death and humor, sublimity and pathos, the rarified and folkloric. In his operas and orchestral music Strauss, along with Mahler, accomplished nothing less than the reinvention of the orchestra and provides a visionary and sometimes apocalyptic assessment of European culture on the verge of collapse. Context is emphasized, and plenty of historical documents as well as DVDs and CDs are used in considering this uniquely rich repertoire.
