Course Description

“These  are the times that try men's souls.” So wrote Thomas Paine in his well circulated pamphlet, The Crisis (Dec 23, 1776).  In this course we will examine the crises that led to the founding of the United States of America.  We will revisit the causes, conflicts and outcomes of the American Revolution, the development of our founding documents and the emergence of the first two party system in America, the Federalists and Antifederalists. In this course, we will discuss selections from the works of Thomas Paine, Ben Franklin and “America’s sacred scripture,” the Declaration, the Constitution and The Federalist Papers.
