Course Description

Written when Sophocles was in his eighties and produced only after his death, the Oedipus at Colonus is a career-summing play – a return to three of his greatest literary depictions: Oedipus, Antigone & Creon; a paean to the city of Athens and hopes for a future better than its war-torn present; another attempt to engage withthe impactful Oresteia of his rival Aeschylus; a deepening of his interest in a more physical kind of drama; and a testing of the limits of tragedy as a genre. We’ll read this difficult play in Greek over two quarters, approximately 90 lines per session.
