Course Description

“The wrath - sing of it, O goddess, the wrath of Peleus’ son, Achilles…” So begins one of the great works of literature and thought, the war between the Greeks and the Trojans uniquely refracted through the divine anger of a demi-man, an anger with consequences for all around him - humans and gods, friend and foe, and finally for himself. We begin a multi-year project to read through the Iliad in Greek, at an approximate pace of 110 lines per session and giving a fragmentary side-glance at the epic universe of scholarly response to this enduring poem. Course reading begins autumn 2017.
