Course Description

The orchestra has become the signature vehicle of Western classical music.  Why this has happened is a fascinating story, musically, of course, but also from social and historical perspectives.  This seminar takes an entertaining look at the institution of the orchestra and its most visible figure, the conductor.  CDs and DVDs, including archival footage, are presented, illustrating the nature and purpose of the various instruments. The careers of Conductors such as Toscanini, Furtwangler, Stokowski, and Bernstein are considered, among others.
