Course Description

This course examines one of the most dramatic moments in the history of the Modern Middle East history and World War I: the launch of the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire.  Students will focus on the outbreak and course of the Revolt as its actors confronted incompatible plans for the region and conflicting colonial designs.  In rethinking the multifaceted designs for the region, we will explore how the legacy of this struggle still resonates in the politics of the contemporary Middle East.
