Course Description

“This nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” (Abraham Lincoln, The Gettysburg Address, Nov. 19, 1863). These words, from our greatest President, still ring in our ears. What was this “new birth of freedom?” We will consider the impacts of slavery, the major conflicts of the US Civil War, and progress towards that new birth of freedom in the writings of Frederick Douglas, Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant and the historic Civil War era Amendments to the Constitution.
