Course Description

Eudora Welty is a master at doing what many would counsel against: namely, deriving narrative momentum and meaning from the unfolding thoughts of her characters. Through close reading, discussion, and in-class exercises, we will examine how Welty uses voice, point of view, and a concretely wrought external world to create stories that inhabit a character's unique consciousness. We will gain a better understanding of how to get ourselves (and our readers) inside our characters' heads and under their skins, and a better appreciation of how—when done well—evoking thought can make for thoroughly engrossing, dynamic fiction. Students should read “A Still Moment” before class, which is available online.
