Course Description

Film is a narrative medium, like novels and memoirs; a visual medium, like photography and painting; a performance medium, like theatre and opera; and an auditory medium, like radio-drama and music. In this class, writers of fiction and memoir will learn and apply lessons from the eclectic medium of narrative cinema. In addition to completing writing exercises, we will screen, analyze, and discuss several short films and excerpts from features with an eye toward composition, camera/lens movements, editing techniques, overlapping dialogue, perspective/ point of view, and other ways in which the example set by motion pictures can spur prose into motion.
