Course Description

In Bird by Bird, Anne Lammot writes: “Plot grows out of character. If you focus on who the people in your story are, if you sit and write about two people you know and are getting to know better day by day, something is bound to happen.” With this idea as our guiding principle, we’ll use scene-work, in class prompts, targeted reading assignments, class discussion and, most importantly, workshopping, to help our characters evolve. Though designed for students at any stage of work on a novel, the class benefits those working on short stories or memoirs as well.
