Course Description

Changing social conditions of the Romantic period encouraged the birth of the solo virtuoso. We will explore the Romantic concerto and the emergence of virtuoso solo parts in the works of Franz Liszt, Robert Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn, and Johannes Brahms. We will also study examples such as Liszt’s E-flat Piano Concerto, the virtuoso violin concertos of Mendelssohn and Paganini. We will conclude with a study of the 20th century approach to the virtuoso concerto as seen in the works of Sergei Prokofiev, Bela Bartok, and Maurice Ravel.
