Course Description

In this seminar, we will discuss modern understandings of religion's relationship to the public sphere. Beginning in the Western Enlightenment, we will discuss how the question of the role of religion was shaped by distinctive anxieties and understandings of belonging. Looking at the history of Western empires in the 19th century, we will examine how Christianity and “native religion” occupied distinct spaces and inform modern understandings of the public and private that structure constitutions and legal codes.  As case studies, we will examine how terms like secularism are used in France, India, and the United States today.
