Course Description

More than a progression of rulers and powers, the Middle East is home to a diverse array of peoples who have preserved a vast religious, linguistic, and cultural human heritage across centuries or even millennia.  This seminar introduces the human diversity of the Middle East from pre-Islamic times to modern day by analyzing the paradigmatic ways these groups emerged, interacted, and defined themselves across time.  Through a combination of lectures, photos, videos, readings, and primary documents, students will be able to identify and appreciate the diversity of these groups, and place them within the complicated historical developments of the region.
