Course Description

This one-day workshop is an introduction to the elements of fiction and how developmental editors work with authors to strengthen a fiction manuscript. Theory of Developmental Editing will be presented in the morning, and attendees will have the opportunity to practice those skills on selected pages of a manuscript in the afternoon using the elements of plot, storyline, conflict, and tension. The instructor will go over how a professional developmental editor would developmentally edit that story with attendees, who will be able to see how that compares with their work.

Note that attendees will be asked to bring a laptop that has MS Word on it, and they must know how to work in Track Changes.

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of this workshop, students will have:
- an understanding of how developmental editing for fiction differs from other types of editing;
- a working knowledge of the essential elements of fiction;
- the ability to identify and map out a plot diagram for any manuscript;
- practiced utilizing the elements of fiction to developmentally edit the first ten pages of a fiction manuscript, including how well the author has used conflict and tension to "hook" the readers in those ten pages.
