Course Description

Machiavelli’s Prince famously concludes that it is better to be feared than loved. Yet just nine months after completing The Prince, Machiavelli writes a letter to a friend to say that he is himself desperately in love. In an effort to understand and appreciate these two Machiavellis—the cold-blooded advisor to princes and the hot-blooded lover, raconteur, and poet—this course will examine The Prince and its companion piece, The Life of Castruccio Castracani of Lucca, as well as both of Machiavelli’s plays, most of his poems and stories, and select comic letters.
