Course Description

Homer the poet was an 8th century BCE blind singer of tales from the Greek island of Chios who might or might not have ever existed. But the works attributed to him—the Iliad, the Odyssey, and a collection of hymns to gods and goddesses—have been regarded as canonical and foundational through the ages. The Homeric epics are surprisingly exciting to read as well as mysterious in their origins and meanings. In this week-long seminar, we will read and probe some of their most famous episodes in various English translations from the Renaissance to today. We will also explore some of the vast array of responses to and transformations of Homer’s strange and wondrous tales in painting, cinema, and other arts.

Notes

All cancellations and requests for refunds must be submitted in writing and will be subject to a $250 per person cancellation fee. Cancellations received before July 22, 2024 will result in a forfeiture of 60% of the program cost per person. No refunds will be given for cancellations received after July 22, 2024.
