Course Description

Instructor: Clare Pearson

In this class we will explore two classic French novels that were then and are still very popular: Les Miserables (1861), by Victor Hugo, and The Count of Monte Cristo (1844) by Alexandre Dumas. Hugo was at the cutting edge of French Romanticism, and while Dumas’ works are usually considered adventure fiction, they share much in both theme and style. Both books feature themes of injustice, revenge, and forgiveness in mid 19th century France; both feature men who develop new lives and have to adopt false identities. We will begin with the opening chapters of The Count of Monte Cristo, using the Robin Buss (Penguin Classics) translation. We will use the Signet translation of Les Miserables (lee Fahnestock & Norman McAffee).
