Course Description

Instructor: Joseph Alulis

From Washington Irving to George Saunders, American authors have contributed masterpieces to the genre of the short story, so much so that a single course can only begin to explore this body of literature. What sets the short story off from longer works of fiction? Is there anything common to the various works that make up the corpus of the American short story? This course will pursue an in depth exploration of four American masters of this form distributed over time and space drawing on different aspects of the American experience, Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864), Herman Melville (1819-1891), Willa Cather (1873-1947)and Eudora Welty (1909-2001).
