Course Description

This course looks at China today with the perspective of recent history. The calamities of the end of the Qing Empire in the mid-19th century to the reinvention of the idea of Chinese civilization in the years after set the stage for a century of revolutions of different kinds. We will discuss the Nationalist and Communist revolutions in the 20th century as well as the reemergence of China at the center of geopolitics. Throughout we will talk not only about politics and identity, but also different social and intellectual understandings of being Chinese in the world.
