Course Description

This course examines the births, lives, and revivals of Chinese intellectual history in the past 100 years. We will consider Mao Zedong's distinctive radical tradition modifying Marx to Chinese economic conditions and the vast intellectual changes the ascent of this movement brought with its transformative revolutions. We will also consider different philosophical conceptions of the Chinese nation and its distinctive heritage that have underlined conservative responses to the mainland's revolutionary agendas. Finally, we will discuss the unlikely restoration and enduring resonance of traditional Chinese thought forms such as Confucianism and Buddhism in the academic, artistic, and political realms.
