Course Description

Why did Shakespeare, along with writing many plays about love and marriage and then about English history, turn also to stories of the classical world? What did it offer him to explore political struggle, love, and human relationships in the older times of Julius Caesar, Troilus and Cressida, Antony and Cleopatra, and Coriolanus? What happens when the world he portrays is no longer Christian and monarchical?

Enroll to discuss all of these questions and more.

Students can use any reputable Shakespeare edition.
