Course Description

It’s not just the tone poem, although some tone poems are included -- sonatas, suites, symphonies, even string quartets narrate the greatest stories in world culture. Excluding opera, which can be textually explicit, this course examines such pieces as a string quartet after Tolstoy; symphonies and sonatas based on Shakespeare, Dante, Goethe and the 1001 nights; and evocations of Cervantes, Gogol, Dickens and Edgar Allen Poe, among others. Music’s uncanny ability to conjure concrete extramusical worlds and the means it uses to do so is analyzed in this fascinating class, with plenty of visual and audio excerpts.
