Course Description

As professional project managers in today's complex, dynamic, and global world, we are constantly reminded that we must strive to "meet and exceed" our customers' expectations. This has become a mandate, whether delivering new products, services, or project outcomes. Our ability to understand "the voice of the customer" in order to deliver project outcomes that will "delight" them is not a trivial matter. The challenge is that most customers do not excel at articulating exactly what they want or need, much less what would "delight" them. Yet they will recognize what they like and even delight them once they "see it".

Design Thinking offers a fresh and practical approach to getting at what really makes customers tick. Design Thinking focuses on understanding the world from the customer's perspective, the use of creative exploration to advance ideas and solutions, and rapid prototyping to determine early on what will meet customer needs and what has the potential of exceeding their expectations. This course focuses on exposing the working Project Manager to the fundamental ideas and concepts of Design Thinking as it pertains to the discipline of Project Management.

Learning objectives:

  • Apply principles of Design Thinking to gain greater buy-in from key stakeholders
  • Apply Design Thinking tools such as Ethnographic interviewing, Personas, Stakeholder Maps, and Customer Journey to create empathy with customers and deliver superior project deliverables
  • Effectively use ideation techniques and rapid prototyping to complement the Agile Methodology for project management
  • Develop a roadmap to introduce Design Thinking to project management within organizations
  • Enhance project management styles and technique to reduce costs, shorten cycle times, and deliver deliverables that will resonate with the intended customers
