Course Description

This course will focus on Miyoko Ito and Evelyn Statsinger: two women artists working at the edges of their Chicago cohort, and not easily captured in the historical categories of Chicago painting. Instead of incorporating images derived from mass culture like other Imagists, Ito carefully carved out abstract space with subtle tone gradients. Also using modulated color, Statsinger’s paintings describe scenes of bounty and nature. We will explore a new archive, gallery, or museum each session in order to learn more about these artists and their colleagues (Imagism and Monster Roster), while also experiencing different paradigms of collecting and archiving material.

Classes will be held at various locations throughout the city. Details on location will be forthcoming from the instructor before each session starts. Students will be responsible for their own transportation.

This course is developed to support Art Design Chicago 2018
