Course Description

This course explores the history and continued importance of public art in Chicago through the examination of a selection of notable case studies from the late 19th century to the present. Two issues will shape this course. First, we shall examine the artistic and historical circumstances of these projects, paying particular attention to why, how, and where each artwork was created. Second, we will explore how these works function in and/or relate to our contemporary moment. The course will include multiple field trips to view sculpture, architecture, and murals near the Gleacher Center, and thus will involve some walking.

This course is developed to support Art Design Chicago 2018
