Course Description

News from the Middle East often fill the pages of periodicals and dominate the attention of news networks. This course seeks to provide students with the broader context to the headline-making current events taking place in the Middle East. Using news reports as a launchpad for topics, we will explore the historical context of today’s headlines. Why is Saudi Arabia bombing Yemen? Why is Qatar being boycotted by its neighbors? Is Lebanon on the brink of another civil war? How is the situation in Syria changing? Why are Sufis, Shiites, and Sunni Muslims fighting each other? How exactly are the Kurds and why don’t they have a state? These and other current events will be studied through a combination of lectures, discussions, and readings to illuminate the current crises facing the Middle East.
